Welcome to Browne Education Campus

Principal Dwight Davis of Browne EC

Greetings Parents,

I hope you had a restful weekend. Please find below information regarding DCPS's plan to reopen classrooms as well as information about important events taking place this week.

DCPS will begin to open a limited number of CARE Classrooms at 35 elementary schools on November 18. DCPS expects to have more than 600 student seats available in this first phase. Schools are reaching out to families directly with seat offers.

CARE stands for “Canvas Academics and Real Engagement” and is an example of DCPS’ commitment to maximize learning. In these small-group classrooms, students will have supervised care for the school day from a caring adult who is not their teacher. Students will have the benefit of being with their peers at school but will participate in lessons virtually on a computer.

CARE Classrooms will meet five days a week and Wednesdays will be a half day. Classroom facilitators will be DCPS elementary school staff or an employee of a trusted school partner. CARE staff will receive professional development based on their role and experience. We will also have three Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) at schools to support school-based health protocols, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and staffing of the health isolation room.

Since students will learn online in CARE Classrooms, each student will have their own technology device and headset. Socially distanced classrooms will also have surge protector power strips, and cord covers.

All students will receive breakfast and lunch at the school, which they will eat in their classroom. Recess will also be offered each day. Playground usage will be limited to CARE Classroom students only during the school day.

You can watch a series of short videos about what the school day looks like:

Thanksgiving Break Begins for Scholars- November 25th, 2020

Thought of the Week

“How was our criticism of Black people any different from the anti-Black criticism of White racists? I learned in that office that day that every time I say something is wrong with Black people, I am simultaneously separating myself from them, essentially, saying ‘them niggers.’ When I do this, I am being a racist” Ibram X. Kendi

Browne Value of the Month

“We are dedicated to the success of our students, colleagues, families and community members to be reflective learners who collaborate, inquire, and take action to create a better world.”

Parents, you are Browne’s number one partner in supporting student academic success. In an effort to provide you with accurate and timely information on your scholars academic and social emotional progress, DCPS has launched the Aspen Parent Portal for Elementary Schools and EC’s.

The purpose of the Parent Portal feature is to establish open communication between teachers and families, allowing both parties to more easily work as a team in supporting each student’s learning. The Parent Portal provides families more information about what occurs in the classroom, helping you become better equipped to support your child’s strengths and areas of growth. In SY2016-17 DCPS launched the Aspen Parent Portal in grades 6-12. This fall, DCPS expanded Parent Portal access to grades K-5.

With the access to the parent portal, you will be able to access your child's grades, attendance information and communicate more easily with your child's educators. The only thing that you need to do is ensure your email address is accurate and up-to-date in our system. Please be on the lookout for an email that provides information on how to access the portal.

This week is American Education Week and we would like to encourage celebrate by talking to you child about their experiences in school. We are asking participating families to record a brief interview, (audio only) with their scholars, asking one thought-provoking question and its response. The questions are as follows:

Student-Parent Interview Questions

ECE- Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

K-2- What did you want to be when you grow up?

3-5- What is your biggest challenge that you had to overcome in school?

6-8- What is one piece of advice that you would give me about school?

Students will also create a drawing which graphically captures the interview. Drawings may be of the child and parent and/or an illustration of the reply given. Voice recordings can be captured using a variety of free apps, some of which are Voice Memos (iOS), Rev (iOS, Android), Voice Recorder & Audio Editor (iOS), Voice Recorder Pro (iOS), Otter Voice Notes (iOS, Android), and RecForge II (Android). Drawings can be captured using cellular or tablet cameras or scanned by other means and saved. To protect student identities, we stress that names are not disclosed in either the interviews or artwork.

Artwork and interviews will be assembled and arranged in a production and posted next week on Browne's social media pages. Students will submit their audio clips and pictures of their drawings via email to their teachers by Monday November 23rd. We thank you in advance for your support.

We believe that families are essential partners in student success. As a result, we listen to families in order to cultivate trusting and collaborative relationships. When these relationships are built; student outcomes improve, teachers are more effective, families are honored and valued, and the community becomes stronger than the individual parts.

In an effort to ensure our parents are heard and fully informed, we hold two Browne Community Conversations per month. For the month of November, our community conversations will take place on Friday November 6th, 2020 at 9am and Thursday November 19th, 2020 at 5pm.
