My name is Ms. Settles. I’m in my 7th year as a Pre-K 4 teacher. In this time, I earned the status of a Highly Quality ECE educator by receiving high evaluations from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), TNTP formerly known as The New Teacher Project and CLASS Observations. In 2015-2016, I finished in the top 10% of first year DC teachers. In 2016-2017, I represented the Teach for America (TFA) DC region in the Sue Lehmann Fellowship where my classroom was examined by a national panel. I was invited to work on a TFA Empathy project. In the Empathy project, my behavior was tracked to see how I modeled self-awareness, connected with my students and communicated with their families. Also, my impact includes being included in a roundtable discussion with Easter Seals Child Development Center and the Office of Secretary of Education, Office of Disabilities and Rehabilitative Services. During the round table discussion, we discussed the importance of inclusive classrooms. I worked with the DC Association for Public Charter Schools to survey Principals of Color’s best practices, inter-governmental relations and communications gaps. In August 2018, I received a Community Playmaker Award from Walmart during half time Mystics Game at the Verizon Center. Finally, I earned a master’s degree from American University in 2018 in Education Policy and Leadership.
My previous career was as a communications contractor for the federal government at the General Services Administration and the Administration on Aging. Also, I am a member of Lambda Pi Eta Communications Studies Honor Society of the National Communications Association, Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE) and DC Education Coalition for Change (DECC.)
I am a fifth generation Washingtonian. I went to Jessi LaSalle, Alice Deal JHS and Archbishop Carroll High School. Teaching is my jam and I am advocate for neighborhood school. I’m a lifelong learner and educator who enjoys being in the classroom. I am an advocate for neighborhood schools.
